At this point the Republicans are all-in on the MAGA cult, and the moderates left in the party care more about being in power than they do about governing responsibly. I don't think it's a scenario even worth pondering, because I don't think it's possible for someone like Mitt Romney to get the party nomination for president anymore anyway.
None of us can accurately predict what craziness the MAGA cult will believe in next, so I wouldn't put it past Trump to run as a third candidate in the presidential election if someone other than Trump got the Republican nom. Or they'd just reject the results of the Republican primaries entirely and claim it's a plot by the George Soros-led Jewish space lizard cabal that rules the world to keep whatever anointed MAGA cult nutbar is the preferred nominee du jour out of the election. Or whatever.
I think the only plausible scenario in which Donald J. Trump isn't the Republican candidate next year is if he croaks.
