165,000km. Was serviced absolutely by the book. Apparently what happened is a common problem - my shop said they had the exact same issue a few weeks previously - and a google search uncovered lots of similar complaints around that mileage range. Probably $6-$7k to repair and would be in shop for a month.

We had actually been thinking about a new car and then to use this as a second car - but had been holding off - so my plan now is actually to keep and repair it when we have the cash. But we do need a vehicle now - we live out in the boonies and work in calgary. It already cost me $400 to rent for 2.5 days and luckily our neighbours are letting us use their second car until we get a new one. Extremely kind of them.
