It would be interesting to see the data and how this year compares to others. While it has undoubtable been bad in terms of lack of rain this summer seems much better (to me) than the past few in terms of smoke. We've had a few days where it was very bad but the rest has been irritating at best. Some days smoky, then clearing for a few days. Two years ago IIRC it was literally weeks on end of smoke, or so it seemed.

We have a bad combination in Canada of building things in higher risk areas, using very very poor quality building materials and design elements that rapidly get destroyed very quickly when mother nature lashes out.
We can and should do WAY better

You may be right about this. Governments and people are never going to agree on a solution, but eventually one will be forced on us whether we like it or not.
