Trump is self aware. He's a bumbling idiot on a lot of levels, but he knows what he is doing in creating his image. The election lies are not that different than his personal wealth lies. He's all about the facade literally and figuratively.
He puts way more effort into appearing rich than actually building wealth. He is on record as only caring about how he only cares about how a restaurant or hotel looks like on the outside. He is very aware that he doesn't own building just because they have his name on the top, but that doesn't stop him from counting them as his assets.
He created his political persona by creating an image he could sell to rural America, and going with the election was stolen was an easy sell to his bubble. He knows no one likes a loser, so going with the election was stolen is the only way to stay relevant.
