Well as we saw this summer, teams with cap space were able to add good players at a fraction of their value. So ya cap space is pretty important. Not to mention when you have a lot of upcoming prospects you probably want to be strategic in how you spend your money. Not to mention you'd like to see how your prospects pan out to determine where you should spend your cap space to best fill the holes on your roster. So ya I don't see why Yzerman would trade good prospects who will be on value contracts for a guy like Hanifin who is going to need a huge deal. A guy like Petry costs you nothing and fills out your top 4 for a couple years while your own guys develop.
