If the Red Wings and Sabres are playing hard ball right now, there's  still no reason for Conroy to trade Hanifin for a subpar return (e.g. mediocre vet + 1st + b-tier prospect) for the  sake of trading him before the season starts.  
 
50% retained on  Hanifin at the trade deadline opens up another few suitors  that have enough cap space to take Hanifin without giving back salary and could use help  bolstering their top4 defense - e.g. Devils, Jets, Wild, and Blue Jackets  (if Werenski is still on IR).
