I'm not an HVAC expert by any means, but anecdotally I used to use the expensive filters as well and blew the motor on my furnace a few years back. From what I understand, the filter is more to stop dirt getting into the furnace system (i.e. it's not an air purifier) and higher MERV filters restrict airflow making the whole system work harder.
