Like, my guy, you are not seeing someone's shadow when they're parked on the side of the road. Come on now.

Anyone can see lights and exhaust though. That's not a skill. They are lights.
? Are you saying that if a car is parked on the side of a city street that you have no chance of identifying if someone is inside until you're perfectly parallel to that car? WTF kind of crazy man taught me to drive then? He taught me to combine different observations to have an idea within 3-5 seconds of passing the car.

Well, you did cut off the portion of that paragraph that literally said I check for lights and exhaust in conjunction. Are you sure you're not over extrapolating what I said out of context into this x-ray vision concept? I'm not saying I only look through the windows at 200m out and I can see if someone's inside. If I had that skill, I'd be a millionaire doing crazy shows in Vegas. I'm just a dude, taught by another dude, not to take off car doors of other stupid dudes.

Lights and exhaust are all combinations of things you add together in conjunction as higher probability to figure out if someone is in the car. Obviously when you get closer the odds of seeing inside increase and you can confirm there was someone in the car. I'm not saying I see a shadow 1 km out and know there's someone inside. I see the car, check for lights and exhaust, check for other things like door open etc., quickly scan driver side and passenger side quickly to determine if it looks mirrored. If none, might be empty. If not, probably a hint there's a shadow of a person inside. At around 8-10 car lengths away, you start getting close enough you can start searching for the shadow of someone inside.

Like I said, my driving instructor taught me this skill of combining all of these clues together in conjunction to determine if someone is inside to increase the chances I can increase my odds slam on the brakes in time to avoid taking off someone's car door. It was the skill of identifying the infinitesimally small odds that someone opens their door without looking and I can't stop in time to avoid taking it out.
