The issue is that old players signed long term in their 30’s are virtually untradeable. Once you make that commitment you are saying that those old guys can get it done for you because you are never moving them for value.
Sharks made the commitment and ended up moving Burns and Karlsson for pennies on the dollar. Flames have their core of Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar (maybe Lindholm, maybe Backlund). Those guys have to work out for you because generally other teams do not want old expensive players, certainly won’t trade significant assets for them.
