The social media book ecosystem (BookTok, BookTube, etc.) is basically the female-oriented counterpart of video game culture. The fans can be just as obsessive, the sub-cultures just as weird and entitled. Millions of gallons of digital ink have been spilt on erotic Sherlock Holmes fan-fic and ‘shipping’ Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. This doesn’t surprise me at all.
