Ever try catching a Jack Russell on the lam?
Train him to lie down when you whistle really loud. That's the only thing that's worked for me; it seems to break his concentration long enough for him to figure out I'm pissed that he's chasing a tennis ball towards an open street. A good friend of mine lost his JRT when it blazed across 2 lanes of traffic chasing something, and got hit on the way back.

They're insanely smart, so I've found training to be quite easy but you need to be consistent or they'll figure out that they only need to listen most of the time. Mine won't listen to a frickin word my G/F says, and only uses her for attention when he's lonely or hungry.
