The funny thing is, with his pathological narcissism, I'm not sure he did "know" them to be false despite being told so by basically all his advisors. I think, despite all evidence, he still believes all the lies he told. 100 knowledgeable advisors are no match for the "truth" he feels in his gut.
It will be interesting to see if that comes into play as part of the defense.
