I'll often book a flight or trip well in advance knowing that it will likely change and usually I'll wait to confirm to keep my options open. Usually when I look up my options, there'll be a better flight available to me that wasn't before (particularly when I book on points).

I've never had an issue where my time has run out and I can't change/cancel anymore.
