I've been in the scenario here in Calgary where it was a fun idea to grab a beer and snack while waiting for others to freshen up before going for fine dining. Those that didn't need to freshen up, send a few emails, call their families etc. grabbed a beer together and watched people wander by in their stampede gear to pass the time.
At the end of the project, a few of them didn't remember where we went for food, but they did recall we blew off a little steam before going to dinner and watched the locals do local things.
I was at a conference where the guy tried to schmooze me and a few others VPs and partners to try and poach us for a big project. Nice dinner with wine and cuisine devolved into beers, shots and whiskey/scotch to show us they were work hard play hard type of people.
That's all I was suggesting. UCB said one VP is a foodie, he didn't say all of them are. I'm saying I've been in a part of a group where others had appreciated loosening the tie a little after some intense work has been completed (so to speak). Maybe that's not the group UCB is going to schmooze. That's fine. I just tossed an idea out there that I have seen that seemed reasonably successful.
"Hey, something stupid. I hear lobster rolls are in season right now. Other than the dinner, anyone else want to try one out sometime?" sort of thing.
I double checked lobster roll season and it's November to May. So it won't work for UCB. So indeed, my apologies for the stupid suggestion.
