Right downtown at the waterfront and walking distance I would suggest McKelvie's Restaurant, amazing Halibut Steak and nice ambiance as well. Definitely my suggestion if you wanted something upscale and authentic and close. The Press Gang Restaurant & Oyster Bar is supposed to be excellent but I haven't gone and is also further.
I was more on the quest for the perfect fish and chips my last trip to Halifax though and I wouldn't really consider Halifax a foodie's paradise unless they are really into seafood. The charm of Halifax is authentic local, so I wouldn't recommend an Italian restaurant there.
When you are done treating your clients and you want a fun little bite, head over to Bluenose II Restaurant for real Maritimer feast.
