Comparatively speaking, I think it was less severe than previous pandemics like the Spanish Flu.
It definitely broke a few brains along the way, a ton of people I still see prosecuting the response are the ones who denied it, and then refused to participate in mitigating it. They seem desperate to prove to themselves that they were right, despite most of their predictions being nonsense.

This is a great point. The only people I really see still banging the drum are the deniers who are just desperate for validation that they were right.
The rest of us have moved on and are greatful to get back to normal life.
The truth is we will never know how bad it could have gotten because before it got there preventative measures were put in place.
Nothing was perfect, we didn't really know what we were dealing with to be honest. We just knew it was the perfect storm of an interconnected world and a fast spreading virus.
Not all measures were necessary I am sure, and some were timed wrong as well, but at the end of the day the only way to truly know how things could have gone would be a controlled study.
And there is something about using human lives to research potential disease implications that is unethical I guess.. the Nazi's probably would have given it a go though.
