Here are some tidbits I liked/found interesting:
  • Conroy had the whole staff involved in picking Trent Cull, so they would own it.
  • Trent Cull's experience was what gave him an edge on other candidates
  • The team looked for a coach that would be able to play the same system in the AHL like in the NHL. That was one of the questions.
  • Pascal made a huge list of coaching candidates, which he then narrowed down, then the whole team took over.
  • The assistant coaches in the AHL stay because they already had contracts, and Trent had familiarity with them. Trent said that the transition would be easier.
  • Conroy thinks that Vegas played the same style this year as the Flames did in 2004. He wants the Flames to play that way next year.
  • Conroy liked Daryl's culture, but not his environment. That's what he plans to change
  • Conroy would've had a hard time collaborating the way he would've wanted with Sutter
  • Conroy thought they should've practiced 3on3 and PP more last year
  • Conroy can still try to sign Phillips next year because he's a UFA. Right now the team is a bit small, and he was only prepared to offer him a 2way.
  • He would've liked to see Phillips get more of an opportunity last year
  • Conroy discovered Duehr while watching Mackey. Thought he scored every time he watched him, and didn't play much despite scoring.
  • Conroy's daughter thought he got owned in the Toffoli trade, and that he should've asked for a 1st and a 2nd. He was trying but picks were really hard to come by at the draft. Iginla was watching Sharangovich's video during that conversation.
  • Conroy believes in leaving spots open for prospects. We will have less PTO's than before.
  • PTO players are NHLers and often look better than prospects at training camp but don't have the same ceiling.
  • It's great Wolf just keeps winning, but he wants him to play next year and have more than 15 games, so he's trying to figure out the best way to make that happen.
  • It's great having the Wranglers in Calgary.
  • Conroy and other staff get to be involved in the new arena planning, giving input regarding dressing rooms, medical, etc.
  • Tod Button is still here because his picks often turn out into really good players. There were quite a few instances where the Flames missed on a player by 1 or 2 picks. Button is also very good at running the scout meetings etc.
  • Fox didn't say anything about not playing in Canada in the draft interviews
