I do remember seeing a video where it showed the skill tree and it looked really complex, but not sure that's what you're talking about.
Basically there are a number of different ways you can do your endgame. You always end up at a point where you're doing "maps" which is the equivalent of nightmare dungeons in Diablo 4. But then you also have an "atlas" skill tree which you can tailor the 'affixes' to your maps.

Each league/season has their own little gimmick, and because PoE has had so many seasons, a lot of those mechanics that were well received got added to the base game. You can tailor your map drops at the end game to more likely drop the types of maps you want to do.

As an example, some people love doing a season mechanic that is essentially tower defense, and tailor their builds to surviving those because they find them to be rewarding and the gear that drops is quite good. You can modify your atlas to drop ONLY those types of maps and play them to your hearts content. You don't have to do the content you don't want to.

In addition to that, because of how complex and difficult PoE is, many people (myself included) haven't even completed the Atlas and the final "uber" bosses that come with that. There are just so many end game bosses that I haven't even seen and I've pumped almost 1k hours into the game.

Also, because of how big the skill tree is, you will find yourself maybe a bit overwhelmed as a beginner. And that is by design, because PoE isn't meant for everyone. It's tailored to a specific audience that isn't afraid of bricking their build (choosing the wrong talents) and having to restart from scratch.

It's often why people will suggest finding a Zizaran guide on Youtube and starting by following a build guide first before getting into doing your own builds. When the skill tree 'clicks' it is super rewarding.

The game also has a trade site that you can search for specific items/mats/gear that you need to complete your build if you have horrible RNG and can't find it.

Uniques / Legendaries in PoE aren't the best gear items in most cases (with a few exceptions like the "headhunter" belt and "mageblood" belt). In most cases, a really well rolled Yellow item will be your Best in Slot for your build.

There's probably a ton more, but people who are hardcore into ARPGs will often flock right back to PoE whenever the new ARPG they try doesn't quite 'hit' for them. Like how I am feeling after D4's disappointment.

Sorry for the wall.
