First of all, 4 of the first 5 picks were not shiny new toys. So I don't think that is as prevalent as you want to believe.
Second, with respect to the bold, it was a very deep draft. Morin was ranked highly in that very deep draft. How is that hard to understand?
Morin's draft year numbers were WAY better than Poirier's. In fact, Morin's NHLe was higher than Poirier has been able to manage, in ANY season, never mind his 18YO season. And offence is the only attribute Poirier has. Morin is better in every other way, AND he has put up better numbers offensively.
If you prefer Poirier, that's fine - tell us why. But just barking 'shiny new toy' does not cast you in the greatest light.
