It seemed like such a little thing from the outside, but looking back on it I think I can understand just how badly it poisoned the room, and spun things out of control.

It's why you hear its so important about coaches developing relationships with players, so you can joke around with them, push their buttons etc.
Throwing a random comment like that through the media if you don't know the person you don't know what it means.
I thought it was a nothing comment, but the person receiving it may thing different who knows.
You don't show up to work and the next day crack a joke that can be taken a different way if the people don't know you.
