Players progress and regress. And their pay tracks along with that. You either pay guys what they're worth, or you lose them. And constantly losing guys, because you have some meaningless formula that you are trying to track, is no way to run a franchise.

I look at it as developing a base plan which you then would reference in the real world for how you want to build a team. There will be give and take based on who is actually available to you, but if you are trying to construct a team you should have a model for how you want to construct it, and see the effects of the decisions you are making.
Edit: Ideally, you want to trade the guys while they are RFA's and recoup assets if the market is strong enough and you need to make trade-offs to construct a competitive team rather then lose them. It might result in lower immediate results, but it should result in better long term results. Alternatively, if you think its a year to go for it, you could view them as trades for the returns you didn't get.
