Indy 5 felt like there was several rejected scripts crammed into one, if I had to guess. James Mangold probably deserves some sort of knighthood for being able to string all of that into one comprehensible story.

I think the magic is gone because you have a bajillion different people weighing into what should be the story, plot and character dev. If you read about the creation of Indy/Raiders there was a lot of work put in by a small team of GOAT creators with the primary purpose of making something creatively great.
