If you put better wheels on your existing road bike (better aero and lighter weight) you would probably notice.
Shifting with higher end components is more precise but if both are well adjusted no real difference in efficiency.
Weight itself go out and ride your bike with two full water bottles vs two empty water bottles and that’s 3-4lbs worth of difference in static weight.
For me I’m of the general opinion that for recreational riding with the odd non-competitive tri / fondo you don’t notice the difference on a more expensive bike in general. But putting better wheels on a cheaper bike will create a noticeable difference.
