If the Pens’ interest in Karlsson is true and the Leafs’ interest in Hanifin is true… I hope Conroy can try to play Dubas against Treliving.

Convince Dubas it would really stick it to his old team if he outbid Treliving for Hanifin. Saw a rumour on the NHL Reddit feed that the rumoured trade for Karlsson is Erik Karlsson w/ $9 million cap hit for PO Joseph, 2 1st round picks (likely lottery protected), and Mikael Granlund (probably to a 3rd team). Don’t know if the source is reliable.

As exciting as it would be to get Nylander… the better move long-term is likely to get a package more similar to what the Penguins are offering for Karlsson. If the flames could convince Hanifin to do a sign-and-trade with the penguins, you could argue he would be a better move for the penguins:

He’s younger, is arguably better defensively and has a better track record of staying healthy than Karlsson. Obviously he doesn’t put up near the offence that Karlsson does but his next contract likely comes in lower than $9.5 million per year and there would be no need for salary retention. Flames could still take back Granlund and not need a third team to be involved. The penguins would also save on a bunch of cap space (compared to Karlsson) this next year while Hanifin has a lower cap hit. If the Penguins are truly willing to trade their next two first round picks, I would love to see Conroy pull those out in a trade for Hanifin.

At the very least, he should try to get the penguins involved to push the Hanifin trade offer up for Treliving or any other GM to match.
