Things happened the way they did but the Flames definitely would have got Johnny to sign had they given him what he wanted the summer before. Problem was he was coming off 2.5 seasons where he played around a 70pt pace and showed significantly less defensive ability than he did in his contract year. I think it is almost a certainty the Flames would have been able to get an 8x9.5M deal done in the summer of 21 but at the time I get why they didn’t especially since they thought a deal was still there to be done before he hit free agency. Ultimately Johnny did what many thought he was going to do and signed out East.
