Both statements are base propaganda. The US has never been a melting pot, it's always been a conform or go live over there and try not to be seen by the rest of us. Canada has always been more of an attempt at a melting pot (let's blend all of our cultures into a new messy non-culture!) without any serious force behind it (EXCEPTING THE OBVIOUS CULTURAL GENOCIDE PERPETRATED LARGELY THROUGH THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES).
Canada/Quebec integration issues are relatively understandable. You are trying to combine English and French into one country. England and France were at war for basically their entire existence from like 1200-1800. Without those Quebec laws - they likely would have separated from Canada by now.

The US might have this type of issue as Hispanic population grows in certain states (think New Mexico is close to majority Hispanic and California/Texas aren't too far behind).
