The possible scenario is one of the young players hits, let’s say Coronato. Gets 20 goals this year and then gets 30 in his final year of his ELC. Flames want to sign Rasmus that summer because he is one year from UFA and they do (because we like signing 30 year olds to longterm contracts). We cannot sign Coronato longterm because we do not have the cap space to give him the number he wants so we sign him to a 3 year deal with a high Qualifying offer at the end of it for his final year of RFA status. We trade him to Florida for some older players on Florida in the summer of 2028.
Smart teams give themselves the ability to sign young players to 8 year deals (or as long of a term as possible). Longer the term with good young players the higher the AAV.
