I for one love France! I'm going there in September for three weeks. It is one of the most beautiful places and French culture is tough to beat.

But, France has certainly done a disservice to its minority communities - particularly its North African populations. France essentially does zero data collection on race on the basis that this land of freedom and liberty doesn't need to (alot like the US) and it has certainly created a ghettoization of certain communities like Parisian outer burbs and Marseille.

France also has a huge cultural superiority problem - Many French people truly hold elitist views about their culture and way of life. Are they wrong? French culture is absolutely amazing, but holding that view while importing millions from former colonies certainly creates an issue. Couple that with ghettoization and lets-not-talk-about-racism, and unemployment and it becomes a struggle.

The country does nothing to address systemic issues with race and immigration, which results in flare ups like these every few years. The response from the police and government tells you all you need to know about how these issues will persist.
