If the Flames aren't blowing it up and rebuilding, and they want to compete, then extending Lindholm is very important as long as it isn't a cap crippling contract.

I don't even think a rebuild is out of the question either. In his free agency presser yesterday, Conroy said something to the effect of the direction will depend on how some things go. If Lindholm and Backlund don't re-sign, the team is somewhat forced into a rebuild of sorts. It probably wouldn't be a scorched earth/blow it all up because we likely won't be able to move Markstrom, Kadri, Huberdeau. But the veterans who do get moved will be for futures, even if it's more focused on younger roster players like the Toffolli deal. I think if we go into the season with some upcoming UFAs like Tanev and Zadorov, they'll be moved mostly for draft picks at the deadline.
