The year before they got to the semi finals and got their skulls caved in by the Avs. They barely stumbled past the Kings, and played a Flames team that got historically bad goaltending.
Last year, they stumbled by the first round, and then except for their pp were poor 5v5 and got historically bad playoff goaltending from an exhausted goaltender.
They're maybe a mid level contender, that's about to get probably a bit worse thanks to cap mismanagement. This is a team that's going to have to over rely on Conna and Pissface. And frankly Conna 5v5 didn't do great in the playoffs.
With the cap the way it is, this year is it, they'd better find a way to load up and win a cup, because things get really interesting next year.
But promoting this team as a Cup contender, They need to fix their goaltending, still fix their blueline, figure out their bottom 6, and a new problem came up this year. Their coach got completely schooled in round two, and his only strategy is to play Conna and Pissy to the point of mental and physical collapse.
Not a contenda.

i was trying to talk some sense into a buddy of mine that is an oilers fan (not sure what my first mistake was.... assuming an oilers fan would comprehend something like that or the fact that i'm buddies with an oilers fan) anyways - i brought up all these points and his reply was that i was delusional and upset becuz flames are "a dumpster fire" (funny hearing that from an oilers fan).
his rational is that "the betting sites" have the oilers as top 5 to win the cup year next.
i tried to explain that the only reason the oilers (and leafs) are so high on those sites is becuz their fans are dumb and a fool and his money are soon parted
then he went on about they are elite becuz they've lost to the eventual cup champs 2 years in a row
yes - but in the recent past the canucks lost to the 'eventual cup champs' 3 years in a row and they still suck.
the conversation ended when i brought up that the oilers didn't go as far in the playoffs as the previous season which shows they are only getting worse. he didn't like that - ha!
