Fans overuse and miss-use the term 'sell high' to a ridiculous degree (like on a 25 year old Mangiapane, for example), but if there was EVER a time that it was applicable, it is in the Toffoli case.
Toffoli is a career second liner with soft hands but below average speed. He competes every night, and he plays well with others. Solid guy and solid player. But last year, he got 1st line duty, 1st line minutes, and was the trigger guy on PP1. He was essentially given the role of our best player. And he had a career year - 15 pts more than any other year - at the age of 30. Now he is looking for a long term extension, starting at age 32.
We all wanted to be wowed by the return, but that didn't happen. And you always want to get the best player in the deal, and the best player is Toffoli. Today. But going forward? I am not so sure. I think Toffoli has one more good year, then he settles back to a 40 pt guy. And there is a pretty good chance that Sharangovich out-produces him over the next few years, and is a more useful player.
We'll see, but it is a lot more interesting than some of the naysayers are suggesting. Also, the people whining that they should have gotten more for a '1st line player' are the same people that have been telling us for the last 2 years that he is anything but.
