The more I look at it, the more I dislike this deal. It's kind of what I feared - it looks to me like the Flames sacrificed value on Toffoli in order to get an asset that can help them compete now. I just don't think Sharangovich is much of a difference maker and likely falls into the 3rd line. He's not old but he's really not young and I don't see a lot of untapped potential.
But he can go on the NHL roster tomorrow, and the Flames like that.
I just don't get why this deal was made now. The value isn't here for it. Toffoli is one of the few soon to be UFAs that I would have been fine with holding onto until the trade deadline next season because I don't think he could have gotten worse value than he did here unless he got hurt.
I also don't know why the Flames didn't retain salary here either. The Flames seem to be the only team in the league afraid of this tool and it continues to hamper the returns on their players.
I think this trade kind of sets the expectation for what the team will do with Hanifin and if they can't errantly re-sign Lindholm.
