If you're a small market team like the Flames you trade them either way. You can't afford to abandon good asset management on a hope and a prayer that you'll be able to make noise in the playoffs.
Doing it the old fashioned way (buying when in a playoff spot) hasn't worked for a long time. It's amazing to me there are still GMs employed who repeatedly do things that provably don't work towards long term success.
Treliving was one of the worst in this regard. I hope Conroy isn't just a stooge who will rinse and repeat broken management techniques.
