I think when the coach is polarizing, then it rubs off on the players. You might like the coach and feel that the guy who doesn't 'like' the coach isn't putting in the effort, so you get mad at the guy.
This is especially compounded if the coach picks on certain players as Sutter appeared to do. That brings emotion into it and necessarily polarizes the players.
