Are they? Most Flames fans are looking for a 2023 1st and a prospect.
Let's look at similar trades of top 4 dmen over the last couple years.
Provorov for 1st, 2nd (looking at just the Columbus pieces traded)
Orlov for 1st (assume other pieces were for Hathaway)
Chychrun for 1st, 2nd, 2nd
Hronek for 1st, 2nd
Ekholm for Barrie, 1st, Schaefer (2022 1st)
Romanov for 1st
Chiarot for 1st, Smilanic, 4th
Ristolainen for 1st, 2nd, Hagg
Jones + 1st for Boqvist, 1st, 1st, 2nd
Hanifin is one of the best d-man on that list. Chychrun probably better but hurt all the time. Similar to Ekholm but Hanifin is 7 years younger. Jones probably had more hype but really was overrated too. If the Flames allow Hanifin to negotiate an extension before making a deal then the return should be really strong.
If they can't get at least a 1st and a 2nd/prospect then it's a huge failure by Conroy.
