If it was to cover up something else I think you would have to consider the possibility.
So let’s assume the announcement was in the 1950s we found alien craft, hid it from the public in a clandestine skunkworks for reasons of national security and today we are revealing that we have lied for 70 years. And then present no evidence of the materials that were found.
I think in that situation we would have reason to be skeptical that revealing the cover up isn’t part of some other cover up.
If Biden said we found bacterial life in mars but have classified all of it and no peer review of any of the data will occur I’d be more inclined to believe they found some world destroying super bug and be more likely to believe.
So under what circumstances would affect if I would believe the announcement. But I come back to an extraordinary claim requires extraordinary evidence.
Why do I believe the Higgs exists? Because multiple teams have reviewed the data and it matches the theoretical predictions and there have been repeat measurements. Create that level of evidence and the world will flip almost immediately.
Would you except a statement from Biden without evidence that aliens exist? Would you except a statement without evidence that the US government has identified these phenomena to be of human origin without evidence?
