They aren't going to win the cup next season and it's 50/50 they make the playoffs as a bottom seed. Next season really doesn't matter that much as it will go down in the books as another season where the Flames participated in the NHL regular season. What does matter is that the team is competitive when they open the new arena and keeping guys like Backlund and Lindholm probably ensure that they are in a San Jose situation to open up the new barn which is less than desirable when you are now jacking ticket prices for a new arena. Everything they are doing today should be with their eyes set on ensuring they have a quality team for the inaugural season at the new arena. I'm a little jaded so I expect the Flames to totally botch this but I'm hopeful that Conroy can prove to me that he's truly going to be different than Treliving.
