It's simply a gamble what the team thinks he's likely to move back to, right now. Simple fact is he's 30, and signed to 7 years after (presumably) reluctantly signing. Everything that could have gone wrong really did go wrong for him and the coaching situation. The question is what is the reasonable expectation for him to match that contract, and what are his chances of getting there? From there you ask what if he doesn't? What will it mean to the team salary structure and what are the chances of signing him if he has a second mediocre season (say, 70 points?). A lot of questions, but I think it's simply about risk mitigation on a 30 year old player who's likely peaked.
