In the now concluded Trek Litverse it states that there are both Klingons impacted by the augment virus and 'regular' Klingons existing during the 23rd century simultaneously. The smooth foreheads are generally looked down on, so that's why they mostly served together during that period and why we didn't see the ridges till the movies. Also the virus must have been cured because of how the TOS 3 Klingons look in DS9.

(also the augment virus is one of my least favorite things in canon right up there with a spore drive. it's not something that needed to be explained in canon)

Yeah, I get that theory, because its been pushed out there. But it kind of falls apart in the original series, where the Klingons are all smooth heads, and their "Great warriers" like Kang (God Colicos was a great Klingon) were the smooth headed folks.

As long as we ignore the atrocious discovery Klingons. I remember first seeing them and going WTF is with that. On top of it, I've always thought that Klingon ship design was iconic. Their ships looked like warships. They had this industrial heavy look even a scout like the BOP (which is an incredible design). Also Klingon ships just made sense. In Discovery they were going for a Andy Warhol combination with the alien design from Aliens, and ended up goofy.

Anyways loved the Spock partying with the Klingon scene last night.

Spoiler!
