Since NHL teams lose so much money and are definitely not profitable you can just offset your capital losses from when you ran the team against your capital gains and remove the tax liability. Unless the owners are making a bunch of money each year anyways, in which case there would not be capital losses. One other way to avoid the taxes would be to pay for your own arena, that would likely generate enough of a loss to avoid paying taxes on your 700 million dollar profit.
