I'm not sure we should be that surprised as McPhee assembled some very talented Capitals teams and did a masterful job of fleecing several GM's into handing him over some of the more talented young players in their organization for practically nothing other than the threat that they may pick an unprotected player. Seriously go back and take a look at some of those trades that teams made. It's comical how bad some of those trades were. I've always felt that a large portion of NHL GM's are not good at their jobs, unqualified to run professional teams and that expansion draft did nothing to change that. If you hire a GM that's proven to be competent at building good teams you already have a leg up on 20+ teams and that's what happened here.
