I’m looking at teams that may be looking for a defenceman like Hanifin and are not in the “scorched earth” phase of a rebuild. This is a list of the top 2023 picks that these teams may/may not consider trading for a player like Hanifin assuming he was willing to sign an extension with that team. I’m not including picks that I believe are untouchable (for example, 5th overall for Montreal).
This list shows what teams have enough draft capital to make 2023 pick(s) the centrepiece of a Hanifin trade and which ones do not and would, therefore, likely need to include young, A-level prospect/player instead as the centrepiece (for example: LA, Long Island, New Jersey, Dallas, and Florida). I’m sure most of the teams listed below are not after Hanifin at all… I included them even if the odds of them going after Hanifin are slight.
