I think it's fair as I responded to someone saying all that mattered in picking a captain was personal performance on the ice...and that's how McDavid was picked.
We've all seen him chirp "lesser" players and be completely selfish on the ice. Even the media sycophants can only drum up the occasional "let's go" to rave about his leadership prowess.
Performance on the ice is not the sole factor in picking a captain, and I think it's less important than having someone who can drag the team into the fight.
McDavid only cares about dragging himself into the fight...the fight to hit the scoresheet.
