I'd prefer lost era. Cardassian war at the tail end might be fun.
But best would still be new stories and new species from the time beyond. Society since the millenium has been steeped towards retreading existing lore and retelling stories from different angles. IMO this is especially tiresome for a theme like science fiction, which is supposed to be about telling new stories and using existing angles to show that even humans in ridiculous future settings have every day problems like the rest of us.

I'd like to see something in the space between the 5 year mission and TMP. They could do stories of what chased Spocko out of Star Fleet, Kirk being kicked upstairs. Bones growing his epic beard and buying leisure suits. Scotty refitting the Enterprise.
