It’s fine to acquire picks but if that’s the way they go, the Flames shouldn’t, nor should the fans, expect those picks to be better than Hanifin. If a pick turns out to be better than Hanifin, that should be considered a home run. Not impossible but unlikely. Especially if you not getting a top 10 pick.

The player isn't going to be better than Hanifin though. Fans need to get that out of their head. This isnt a move to upgrade Hanifin. It's a move to get something back instead of nothing. Hes a UFA. And yes picks are risky but they also have the most upside. They are also currency for trades. I'm also fine getting a young player who isn't as good as Hanifin but will have upside and can grow with the team. Getting a vet is pointless. It's someone who is either going to need to get paid or has UFA eligibility ans can bolt.
