And it’s not an automatic that we trade for a player who played well for his previous team and they come here and aren’t as good as expected. It’s like people suggest there is 0 risk trading for a proven player

3 examples of players we traded for and they under performed. We are talking ppg 90 point guys too. Huberdeau likely bounces back but lots though Tkachuk would be worse considering the previous years linemates
We also likely get an RFA if we go for a young more proven player. If we sign that guy based on previous teams production and that player slips. Now we have an over paid depth player who is close to UFA status and has little trace value
If we can get a top 14 pick in this draft plus a prospec, it’s probably the best way to go with our cap.
