Paid dues is just another way of saying he has a variety of experience.
Love was great in the AHL, but you look at the list of AHL coaches of the year winners, it is really hit and miss on who becomes a good NHL coach, mostly misses in fact especially for ones that went directly to an NHL HC job.
There is a big difference between coaching young players still trying to make it big and who need to prove themselves, compared to working with multi-millionaire Prima Donnas with attitudes and arrogance. For me, that was a big issue with Love. Coming in as an NHL assistance is very meaningful experience.
