While your point stands, I think an official statement from the President of the US or the United Nations coming out and confirming extraterrestrial life and our reverse engineering programs would change things pretty quickly - even if the evidence hasn't been shown in public. I would imagine that if they did make such a bold claim, that they would in fact present some evidence to back it up.
