Why is anyone worried about the Flames promoting someone that has taking over a decade to learn the business, nuances and best practices of the league under some fantastic tutelage?
Conroy didn't just walk into a role here. He was hired by a veritable outsider after gaining more hands on experience across the entire business than past league GMs like Mike Gillis or AGMs like John Wiesbrod ever had (there are many more that could be listed here).
This is not just some crony hire here. Conroy knows his stuff and is deserving of this role. If he hires a coach like Savard or Tanguay who happened to play here, it is also hardly a crony hire like the Oilers. Both of these guys have done their time with other organizations and are certainly deemed hot or up and coming commodities in the NHL.
I highly doubt any other organization was clamoring to hire KLowe or MacT at the point they joined the Oilers nearly right after they retired - that there was classic cronyism and arrogance to think they could just step in and crush these roles with no experience or willingness to learn first.
