Almost every aspect of building a hockey team was irrelevant back then due to the Canadian dollar and no salary cap. I was going to say something similar. The Flames marketed the youth movement back then as something that was positive because they couldn't afford to have high priced stars and proven veterans in their primes on the team. They had to run a budget roster and were trying to make the best of it.
The movement toward youth now is different. The Flames have high priced players, but because of the cap, they need to find young players that can bring energy and play above their cap hit.
